What does a salad have to do with Diversity?

So, this month is all about DIVERSITY .. And naturally, I spent time looking up the definition of diversity and various activities of diversity - in the workplace, at school, at home, etc. But I could never find something that did not center around the topic of ethic diversity .. So, I'll just supply you with some of my thoughts which I drew inspiration from a salad (oh yes)
but first, a definition from dictionary. com (yay!):

diversity
- n
the state or quality of being different
a point of difference
the relation that holds between two entities when and only when they are not identical; the property of being numerically distinct

So diversity is simply being different but somehow our society always draws the definition of diversity to solely mean the differences of our appearances and what separates us from each other on the outside.

Well, I think diversity is much more than simply looking at someone and deciding they are different - it's about what we all bring to the table and our opinions, thoughts, unique qualities, our strengths and weaknesses and everything that is "us".

Thus, enter the yummy
salad (in this picture, a spinach fruit salad = pure deliciousness)

The salad, from appearance, is quite diverse - all the ingredients that make up a salad are different. But together is where the magic happens, the fruit and the vegetables add color that is appealing and a taste that is so out-of-this-world (yes, I'm a foodie, can you tell?). But this is only achieved with the combination of each piece of fruit and vegetable because each ingredient that make up the salad bring something unique to the table and that, is diversity. The spinach adds a slight bitterness that is broken up by the sweetness of both the strawberries and the blueberries and the raspberries add a tartness which all come together to make the most perfect salad.

I think it's time to think and act like the salad. We all bring something different to the table whether through our love of running, enjoyment of reading, our knowledge of science or philosophy or numbers, our obsession with TV shows and movies, our love of animals, our fascination with music, our ability to truly listen to others, our ability to offer advice and guidance in the time of need, or simply our ability to provide comfort and make someone smile and laugh ... or just about anything!

Use your gifts to inspire others, encourage others, and to truly cherish what you bring to the table! Which fruit are you?

Peace. Love. Eat
Jordan

Oh! And .. HAVE A TERRIFIC SPRING BREAK!
